Clonmany, a Village full of atmosphere
and old world charm has lovely walks which take you to Butler's
Glen and Glenevin Waterfall or above the sea on Dunaff Head.
Just ten miles North of Buncrana this village lies sheltered amongst
gentle hills and the calm waters of the Swilly. The usual method
of spelling the name of this village is Clonmany. It is prenounced
as it as written and means "the valley of the monk",
from cluain "a fertile valley" and manach "a monk".
Its fruitfulness and locality, combined with the supposed site
of a monastery, fully support this derivation. It is the youngest
village in Inishowen dating from the middle of the 19th centuary
and yet because it has an old world atmosphere and charm seldom
found in the commercial resorts of today. Spoil yourself with
a swim in Binnion Strand, a walk on the cliffs at Dunaff Head
or a visit to the waterfall at Glenevin where the river tumbles
30 feet over a pitch black rock into a foaming pool. At Roxtown
there is a fine example of a raised beach. Two miles east of Clonmany
on the slope of Magheramore Hill, there is a Bronze Age dolmen
with a massive capstone traditionally called " Finn Mc Cool's
Finger Stone". The Legend says Finn threw it from Sliabh
Sneacht at another giant on Coolcross Hill.
