Donegal
County Museum first opened in 1987. The museum was housed
in what was once the Warden's House of the Letterkenny
Workhouse, which was built in 1843.
The County Museum contains two galleries. Temporary
exhibitions are held year round in the ground floor
gallery.
The first floor gallery contains a permanent exhibition,
which tells the story of County Donegal from Mesolithic
to the Medieval. The story of people, places and events
from Penal Times, through the Famine and the Land War
to World War One and The Emergency.
Donegal County Museum seeks to preserve the inheritance
for present and future generations by collecting, recording,
preserving, communicating and displaying for the use
and enjoyment of the widest possible audience, the material
evidence and associated information of the County's
heritage. By doing so it aims to enrich the lives and
the sense of identity of every person in County Donegal.
Donegal County Museum is free admission. It is open
