(Leim an Mhadaidh meaning 'Leap of the Dog') is the largest
town in Limavady Borough, with a population of 13,000 and
has been awarded Best Kept Medium Town in 1997 and 1998. A
shopping town, developing in retail outlets every day, Limavady
boasts a collection of unusual and independent shops, many
still owned by local families, and hosting a great sense of
pride in the town. Visitors have a wide range of eateries
to choose from and can explore the wide range of crafts and
gifts stocked in the local shops.
The town also has a large recreation centre, which consists
of 25m swimming pool, children's splash pool, hi-tech gym,
competition squash courts and luxurious health suite. Significant
landmarks in the town include the Alexander Memorial Town
Hall, the site where Jane Ross noted down the tune of Danny
Boy and statue of William Massey, previous prime-minister
of New Zealand. A sculpture commemorating Jane Ross is planned
for installation on Catherine Street.
Forging European links through twinning, Limavady has stretched
the hand of friendship to Vigneux, a suburb of Paris and
Westport in County Mayo and enjoys regular visitors from
each. Boasting a number of international events such as
the Danny Boy Festival, Limavady Guinness Jazz and Blues
Festival and Roe Valley Folk Festival, these and any other
