Located
on the banks of the Loguh Swilly.
Wolfe Tones capture and the threat of Napoleonic invasion,
forced the British
into a coastal fortification project. Started in 1799,
in Lough Swilly this
consisted of six forts. By 1912 "Martello! Towers
were erected at Knockella,
Macamish, and Inch with Dunree, Rathmullen and Neds
Point being upgraded with
barracks and blockhouses. In 1884 Dunree was upgraded
with modern guns,
rendering the other forts obsolete.
